Curriculum Fee of $418 per student is due by March 3, 2008.

Parish Mission:  OLSS will host a Parish Mission beginning Sunday, February 17, through Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at 7:00 pm in the church.  A special Children’s Liturgy will also be offered each evening for grades PreK-4 through 5th grade.  Free babysitting will be provided for children 4-years old and younger.  The school will be celebrating Mass on Tuesday, February 19th at 8:30 am instead of Friday, February 22nd.  So mark your calendars now and plan to bring the entire family!  What a lovely way to start our New Year by renewing our faith.  More details will be announced soon.

Lunches:  During Lent season, Friday’s hot lunch with Domino’s Pizza will only be serving cheese pizza.

Parents:

Ø  Reminder:  The handbook states on page 22 that jewelry is limited to one religious necklace, earrings for girls are limited to studs/posts or ½” or smaller hoops only!  No bracelets.  One watch, no alarm or buzzer.  Also, for all students, FOOTIES are not allowed and makeup is not permitted except for clear lip gloss.

Ø  Any and all correspondence sent via the class envelopes/backpacks must be school related and approved by Mrs. Earp.  Any letters or packages that contain personal information needs to be handled outside of school.

Ø  If your middle school student needs to contact you, they will be given a message from the front office that will be posted on the middle school message board.  It is then their responsibility to check the board and come to the front office to make their phone call.  Students are no longer allowed to use the phones in the classrooms or lunchrooms.

Ø  If your child(ren) are participating in a school related function  away from the school, they must be picked up by an approved driver.  Please contact the front office to verify that the driver who is picking up your child is approved.

Ø  Our lost and found is overflowing!!  If your child has misplaced his/her P.E. uniform, fleece, lunchbox or school uniform, please take a minute to check the upstairs cafeteria.

Book of the Month:  The book of the month for February is Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch by Eileen Spinelli.  The theme of this book is love and kindness.  This book gives us a clear idea of what kindness can do for a person and how it can change his/her life.  It is the perfect book to follow last month’s theme.  What a great lesson to our students that if we all try and reach out to everybody (even those that we are not sure about!) we may just help someone realize their worth!

8TH Grade Parents:  The Confirmation Retreat will be on Saturday, March 15th.  The date in the packets given out at the meeting on January 10th was incorrect.  Please note on your calendar.  Also, your child’s baby photos for the yearbook are available in the front office for pick up.

Directory Updates:  Please make the following change to your school directory:

Ø  Goplerud Family: 160 Payasada Oaks Trail; Ponte Vedra Beach, FL  32082

HSA:

Ø  5K Run/Walk:  The First Annual 5K event at Mickler’s Landing last Saturday was the perfect way to end our celebration of Catholic Schools Week.  Strengthening mind, body and soul, the 5K and 1 mile races included almost 400 runners and drew many more fans to make the day a family event.  Thank you to the event chairs, Lisa Dilworth, Kate Warnock, Leila Jackson and Joe Hoff for their hard work and dedication.  Thank you to all our sponsors, vendors, volunteers, runners, and fans.  We look forward to next year.  Flyers were sent home today to order your 5K race shirt.  This is your last chance to purchase a shirt from the Inaugural Palmer 5K & 1 mile Run/Walk!  Orders are due in to the front office by Tuesday, February 12, 2008.

Ø  Golf Tournament:  Registration forms for the Palmer Golf & Tennis Classic, to be held at Jax Golf & Country Club on March 31st, were sent home in the backpacks last week.  Thank you, Seethaler family, for printing the forms.  Our goal is to have a full field of 144 players, so start thinking about your 4-some.  For information contact: golf (Annie Tuttle 536-9741); tennis (Rachel Hune 992-8229); sponsorship (Tracy Pheiff 543-9005).  To volunteer, contact Maureen Diederich (280-9317).

Ø  2008/2009 HSA Board:  Kathy Massoglia, Maureen Diederich and Robin Devenny have agreed to serve on this year’s nominating committee.  A form will be sent home through the backpacks that you can fill out if you are interested in serving on the board.

Music News:  Congratulations to the following Palmer Catholic Academy students for being selected to be a part of the First Coast Honors Choir.   They will be performing with other 4th and 5th graders from Duval, Clay, St. Johns and Nassau counties as well as the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus on Saturday, February 9th.  The concert begins at 3:30 and it will be held at Mandarin Presbyterian Church.  Please come out and support these students as they represent Palmer Catholic Academy.

Fish Fry:  Reel ‘em in! ….It’ll be a great catch too!  The first annual Men’s Club Friday Night Fish Fry will be tomorrow, February 8, 2008, in the OLSS Cultural Center from 5:00 to 7:30 pm.  Fish, baked and fried, with all the “fixins” will be served.  All parishioners and their families are most welcome.  Families - $25, Couples - $15, Adults - $10, Children - $5 and children under 6 – free!  We’ll have some entertainment for children, too.  Come one, come all!!! Help us begin a new parish tradition.

“Vision of Hope”:  St. Gerard’s “Vision of Hope”, The Field of Crosses will be February 9th at 9:00 am.  For the past 20 years, on the first Saturday of Lent, children install crosses on the grounds of Prince of Peace in St. Augustine in recognition of all children’s right to life.  This year, Dr. Alveda Kind, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, is the guest speaker.  This is a great family event.  For more information, call 829-5516.

Bishop Kenny News:   Bishop Kenny has mailed all 8th grade parents a copy of the course catalog for the 2008-2009 school year.  We will be delivering applications to Palmer Academy on February 21st.  If you have any questions as you look through this information over the next two weeks, please contact us at 398-7545.

St. Joseph Academy:    The make-up Explore Test will take place this Saturday, February 9th, in the cafeteria of SJA from 8:00 am until 11:00 am.  Students must bring the $25 test fee and a calculator.  They will provide pencils and all testing materials.

If you have not yet chosen St. Joseph Academy for your son or daughter for 2008-2009, please think seriously about finding out more about the outstanding program we offer.  Schedule a tour during February so that you can make an informed decision and save $100 on the Application fee!  The stellar statistics of the Class of 2007 are reason enough to chose SJA.  The 65 members of the Class of 2007 earned approximately $31,000 per capita in scholarship monies, 74% earned Florida Bright Futures Scholarships and SJA proudly announces its College Acceptance rate is 100% for the past 7 years.  Financial Aid is available.  If cost is a consideration, please contact the Admissions office at (904)824-0431.  All Financial Aid applications must be submitted by March 1, 2008.  Make the best choice for your son or daughter now – choose St. Joseph Academy!
