Unified in Faith, Respect and Service

O sing to the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things!  His right hand and His holy arm have gotten Him victory.  The Lord has made known His victory, He has revealed His vindication in the sight of the nations.

~Psalms 98: 1 - 2~

C-Project:  Beatitude: “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth”.

Book of the Month:  The book of the month for October is Pie in the Sky by Lois Ehlert.  The theme of this book is the appreciation of life and God’s gifts.

Parents:

Ø  Due to the warmer weather this month, our boys have been able to wear uniform shorts to mass.  Beginning October 26th, all of our boys must wear navy trousers to mass on Friday’s. (*Mandatory uniform days)

Ø  Please be sure to have your carpool card in your front window when you come to pick up your child.  It makes it so much easier for our staff to load your child/children and get you on your way.

Ø  Please forward your payments for classroom collections to the front office.  Please include your child’s name and class number and mark the envelope “classroom collections”.

Ø  ITBS make up testing is scheduled for next week.  Please make sure your student is at school on time and has had a nutritious breakfast.

Ø  All tuition and fees (missed lunch or recess duty, library funds, etc.) are due in before report cards can be issued.

School Closing Due to Inclement Weather:  The Diocese of St. Augustine and Palmer Catholic Academy cancel classes due to inclement weather in accordance with St. Johns County public school closings.  Please listen to weather reports through the television and radio for announcements.  St. John’s County school closings are based on the suitability of roads and the consideration of power and safety needs of all schools countywide.

Open House:  Open House for 1st and 4th grade will be held Wednesday, October 17th.  1st grade Open House will begin at 6:00 pm and 4th grade Open House will begin 7:00 pm.

Book Fair Blizzard:  Come to the Book Fair Blizzard, November 26th – 30th.  A blizzard of books is coming our way during our annual Scholastic Book Fair.  This year’s theme is Book Fair Blizzard, and it will bring some of the coolest days ever to the Palmer Media Center.  Students will attend the book fair during their regular library classes, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.  Our special Family Event is Wednesday, November 28th from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm.  Don’t miss it!  You’ll be blown away by our activities, contests and great reads.

Parents, we need volunteers to help with set up, break down and sales during class times and at the Family Event.  If you would like to volunteer, contact any of the Library Ladies…write a note or send an email.  We can’t wait to hear from you!

Community Day:  The St. Johns County Fire Rescue and The Ponte Vedra Volunteer Association will host a community day on October 13th from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm at Fire Station 10; 155 Library Blvd. (next to the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library off Solano Road).  Come out and see Life Flight, “Patches” the robot, the Fire Safety House Simulator, the K-9 Unit, the ladder truck and the Bounce House.  Hot Dogs & refreshments will be provided and fire hats too!

Altar Server Training:  Altar Server training for OLSS parish is now being scheduled for interested students 5th grade and up.  Fliers were sent home last week, and additional copies are available in the office.  Deadline to sign up is October 24th.  First class is October 28th.

Christmas Program:  Our annual Christmas presentation by the Palmer Choir will be Thursday, December 13th.  Please come and hear our amazing students perform!

HSA:

Ø  Angel Ball:  Take advantage of the long weekend  - visiting relatives, etc. – to sell, sell, sell those raffle tickets!  The family with the most ticket sales wins the Wii game system.  Remember, the money we raise defrays the operational costs of our school and keeps tuition down.  Thank you to our OLSS parishioners who have purchased their raffle tickets.  This is a parish event to support our parish school.

Calling All Artists:  Have your artwork proudly displayed on the cover of the 2007-2008 yearbook!  Submit your original artwork showing this year’s theme, “Palmer Pride.”  All entries must be on an unlined, white 8 ½” x 11” paper.  Use black pen or Sharpie marker (no colors).  Your artwork must include the words “Blue Angel 2007-2008” and “Palmer Pride.”  Turn in your artwork to the front office by Wednesday, October 31st.

Dad’s Workday:  Palmer will have a dad’s workday in November.  The date will be announced as soon as it is scheduled.

Bishop Kenny News:   This Friday at 7:30 pm is Bishop Kenny’s homecoming football game.  The BK Crusaders will take on Fleming Island High School in what is sure to be an exciting game.  We hope to see all of the Palmer Blue Angels out Friday night!

St. Joseph Academy:  Families interested in St. Joseph Academy for High School should plan on attending our Open House on Sunday, December 2, 2007, at 2:00 pm sharp at 155 State Road 207, St. Augustine.  74% of the members of the Class of 2007 earned Bright Futures Scholarships.  Bring the whole family; hear from Fr. Houle, our President, the Administration, the teachers and our National Honor Society tour guides!!  Refreshments will be served.  Hope to see you there!

Attention “Green” Families:  The art classes are in need of laundry detergent lids!  Before you recycle the container, please take off the lid, rinse and send to school.  They are the perfect size for holding pencils, crayons, etc.  Thank you for your help!  Ms. Corrigan.

Going Green:  Start making changes at home.  For example, in your kitchen you can:

Ø  Replace cleaners with soap-based products.

Ø  Replace bottle water with purified water from your tap.

Ø  Only run a dishwasher when full and let dishes air dry.

Ø  Unplug small appliances.  Unplug secondary freezers and refrigerators when not in use.

Ø  Upgrade to Energy Star appliances.

Ø  Don’t let a faucet run when washing dishes, hands or vegetables.

Ø  Once or twice a year pour 2 cups of vinegar in the dishwasher and run it a cycle.  It helps decalcify.

Ø  Clean drains with vinegar and baking soda instead of commercial drain cleaners.

Ø  Buy produce from the farmers markets.

Ø  Recycle plastic and paper grocery bags, or use cloth bags.
